Blueprint for a Better San Francisco (Blueprint), formerly TogetherSF, is a political activist organization and a project of donor group Neighbors for a Better San Francisco. Blueprint has advocated for expanding the mayor’s power in San Francisco, reducing the number of county commissions 1 ,  increasing investment in public transportation, increasing investment in public education 2 , and increasing investment in public housing programs. When it was TogetherSF, the group was funded largely by the billionaire capital investor Michael Moritz. Following his failed local election in 2024 that cost him over $7 million, he halted investing towards TogetherSF. As of 2025, TogetherSF partnered with Neighbors for a Better San Francisco and changed its name to “Blueprint for a Better San Francisco. 3

Advocacy

In 2022, Blueprint, then called Together SF, launched the That’s Fentalife! Campaign an awareness campaign to promote legislation and community programs tom manage the Fentanyl overdose epidemic within San Francisco. The campaign created and used signage and other visuals which were meant to be “provocative and anger people to the point of action,” 4 according to the organization. resulted in citizens sending over 58,000 letters to city hall and state leaders. 5  Though initially met with backlash from local officials, it resulted in over $115 million being invested in drug safety/enforcement efforts and addiction treatment programs. It also allegedly led to partnerships between law enforcement officials to promote partnerships with local advocacy groups to “target fentanyl distribution networks.”  4

During the 2022 and 2024 election cycles TogetherSF released and oversaw voter outreach programs that included  door-to-door canvasing, phone calls, social gathering focused around TogetherSF-made voter guides, and outreach from influential organizations. 6 During the 2022 midterm cycle TogetherSF volunteers claimed to have “distributed 55,000 voter guides, made 3,000 phone calls, and knocked on nearly 4,000 doors across the city—helping neighbors…make choices on candidates and measures.” 7 By 2024, TogetherSF claimed that its efforts resulted in the election of Democrat Brooke Jenkins as San Francisco (SF) District Attorney, Democrat Joel Engardio as SF District Supervisor, SF Unified Board of Education member Lisa Weissman-Ward, and SF School Board president Lainie Motamedi. 7

Ballot Measures

In 2024, TogetherSF advocated for a ballot measure that would reduce the number of commissions allowed in San Francisco. It did not provide a specific number of commissions but stated that similar commissions should be condensed into a single commission. TogetherSF ended up pulling the measure before it was voted on. 8

In 2024, TogetherSF advocated for a ballot measure that would expand the mayor’s power in San Francisco. The reform would expand the mayor’s power in hiring and firing commission and department heads. 8 TogetherSF’s executive director Kanishka Cheng claimed that expanding the mayor’s power would ‘ “provide clear authority over who’s in charge in SF government so voters can…hold elected officials accountable.” ‘ 9 The measure was eventually dropped due to the president of the Board of Supervisors, Aaron Peskin, publicly opposed TogetherSF accusing it of “being controlled by big-money interest.” 9

Funding

Michael Mortiz is the founder and former funder for Blueprint for a Better San Francisco. Michael Mortiz is a capital investor previously worth over $7.5 billion who formerly worked as a journalist at Times magazine before being promoted to Time’s San Francisco (SF) bureau chief.
