Background

The Yale Center for the Study of Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration is an academic center at Yale University that houses graduate-level research activities as well as undergraduate majors including the Ethnicity, Race, and Migration program, which is the flagship program of the center and was described by the university newspaper as one of the fastest-growing majors at Yale College. 3

In January 2020, the RITM received a $4 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation “intended to advance the study of race within humanities fields across four universities: Yale, Brown, Stanford and the University of Chicago.” RITM announced plans to use the funding to establish new curricular programs, support faculty research projects, provide increased institutional support for students and strengthen community development initiatives. 4 The Mellon Foundation grant led to the formation of the Centering Race Consortium between Yale and other schools to coordinate research and events around racial studies. 5
