The University Industry Research Corporation was a grantmaking organization that received most of its funding from the Intel Corporation, a multinational corporation and technology company, that focused on providing grants to science and technology organizations and educational institutions. 1

It focused on providing funding for universities and other educational entities until it was dissolved on December 31, 2021. 2

Funding

The University Industry Research Corporation used most of its revenue to provide outgoing grants to other organizations and educational entities, mostly regarding technology.

UIRC, according to its tax returns, provided grants to universities and organizations in Israel, Switzerland, France, Germany, Spain, and China. 3 These included grants for “computational intelligence” with a focus on “machine learning,” and a large number of grants that prioritized research to improve the Intel Corporation’s “network on intelligent systems.” 4

It provided a total of $124,000 to the Earth Research Institute (ERI) between 2014 and 2015. It is also listed on the ERI website as being a funding agency for the organization from the beginning of July 2018 until the end of June 2019. 5 6

UIRC was recognized by the Vanpoint Society for contributing $100,000 or more to Portland State University. It was also recognized by the Park Blocks Society for making annual contributions to Portland State University. The contributions were used to fund scholarships, campus development, and academic programs. 7 8

UIRC is also listed as a donor and partner of the EPFL, a distinguished science and technology university located in Switzerland. 9

Financials

UIRC received just under $5.6 million in contributions and grants in 2017. Intel Corporation, an American multinational corporation and technology company, contributed $5,534,000 of that amount. UIRC’s total expenses amounted to approximately $5,000 less than its total revenue. In total, the organization spent all of Intel Corporation’s contributions on outgoing grants. 10

University Industry Research Corporation’s total revenue dipped in 2018 as it received less than $3.4 million, all of which came from contributions and grants. The Intel Corporation provided UIRC with $3,330,000 which was the same amount UIRC spent on outgoing grants and contributions. The organization’s total expenses amounted to approximately $1,000 less than its total revenue. 11

UIRC’s total revenue was substantially less in 2019. It received a total of $722,561, and its only other form of income was $490 from interest on savings. The Intel Corporation provided UIRC with a total of $700,000 in contributions. The organization’s total expenses amounted to just under $735,000, and its outgoing grants and contributions cost $700,000. 12

According to its 2020 tax return, the University Industry Research Corporation received no contributions or grants and had a total revenue of just $57 from interest on savings. It still had a small expense total of $23,643. 13
