Background and Activity
The Prospect KC was established in 2019 by Kansas City native and chef Shanita McAfee-Bryant, who gained national attention on the Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen” reality TV competition, as an advocacy group and service organization devoted to combating hunger, homelessness, and poverty on the city’s East Side, an area that the organization describes as living in “food apartheid, a racist and oppressive system that creates inequitable food systems.” The organization initially focused on nutrition education and healthy meal provision before expanding into paid culinary-training programs. 3
In December 2024, the Prospect KC merged with Nourish KC, a longstanding community kitchen, to integrate its locations and training programs into Nourish KC, which reported serving over 500,000 meals annually. 4
The organization operates five “community-building initiatives,” including Culinary Job Training, Kitchen Confidence, Real Food for Real People, Stir the Pot, and Making A Chef. The group’s flagship training initiative provides a 16-week paid training program with ServSafe certifications, hands-on culinary experience, and job placement assistance. Additional projects have included The Nook KC, a training coffee shop in the Kansas City Central Downtown Library, which accepts SNAP benefits. In August 2024, The Prospect KC and McAfee-Bryant were sued in state court by the organization’s landlord for eviction, seeking two months of unpaid rent at double the lease rate, plus late common area maintenance fees and attorney costs. The landlord described the action as a last resort after failed negotiations. McAfee-Bryant called the suit baseless and resource-draining. 6 The organization vacated the space when it merged with Nourish KC and moved to that organization’s facility. 7
