Background
The Miller-Wehrle Family Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt private family grantmaking foundation founded in December 2007 in Washington, D.C. Its president and treasurer is Elizabeth M. Wehrle and its vice president and secretary is Matthew B. Miller. Among the officers, the latter pair are the only ones based in Washington, D.C., as well as the only ones to have contributed over $5,000 to the foundation. The other two officers, both listed as directors, are members of the Miller family. 5

Grant recipients of the Miller-Wehrle Family Foundation include left-of center labor-oriented groups, such as the Coalition for Immokalee Workers and National Domestic Workers Alliance; immigration oriented groups, such as the Capital Area Immigrant’s Rights Coalition, United We Dream, Black Alliance for Just Immigration, and the Women’s Refugee Commission; environmentalist groups, such as the National Audubon Society and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation; social-issues groups including the National Network of Abortion Funds, a nonprofit which provides financial and logistical support to abortion providers and the Sexual Minorities Youth Assistance League, a nonprofit focused on youth-LGBTQ issues based in Washington, D.C.; and the Innocence Project, a nonprofit which aims to exonerate inmates wrongly incarcerated. 6 7 8 9
Additionally, the foundation supports a variety of civic organizations in Washington, D.C., such as Miriam’s Kitchen, which assists the local homeless, and the Free Minds Book Club and Writing Workshop, which uses writing workshops and educational programs to develop and connect the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated. 10 11
