The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform is a pro-life organization known for regularly showing graphic images of abortion. The group contends this is necessary for the public to understand the reality of abortion. 1

When the organization holds public events, these graphic images of dismembered unborn babies are frequently juxtaposed with photos from the Holocaust, the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia, and Jim Crow-era lynchings of African Americans in the American South. 2

Background

The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform is a pro-life organization based in California founded in July 1990. It has become most known for regularly showing graphic and disturbing videos and photos of abortion. The group contends this is necessary because until the reality of abortion is confronted, it will never be understood. 3

The group obtains some of the displays from a textbook titled The Developing Human: Clinically Oriented Embryology. When on college campuses, organizers welcome students to bring their own embryology textbooks if they want to argue based on facts. The center, while displaying images at college campuses, has claimed some of the graphic images also come from an abortion clinic but would not disclose which clinic. 4

In some cases, center organizers put posters of the graphic images from abortions next to images of Holocaust victims. 5 6 In other cases, the graphic images have been on 18-foot-high wall-like structures. 7 Other displays have shown images of dismembered unborn babies juxtaposed with photographs of the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia and Jim Crow-era lynchings of African Americans in the American South. Pamphlets passed out by the group state, “We do not equate aborting mothers to Nazis; many such mothers are themselves victims. Our purpose is never to condemn anyone for past abortions, but to protect children and mothers from future abortions.” 8

The organization also displays the graphics on a large box truck. 9

The organization says it opposes “violence against babies and against the abortionists” and professes to follow a “creative tension” model advocated by civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. 10 The organization also has adopted William Wilberforce as a model because Wilberforce demonstrated what slavery really looked like and helped shift public opinion in England to abolish it. 11

Programs

The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform has several projects that include the Genocide Awareness Project, the Reproductive “Choice” Campaign, the Corporate Accountability Project, the Church Project, Matthew 28:20, and AbortionNO. 12 13

The Genocide Awareness Project had 11 events on university and college campuses in 2019, reaching 352,630 people, according to the group’s 2019 annual report. 14

Leadership

Gregg Cunningham is the executive director of the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform. Cunningham is a former two-term Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and introduced legislation that ended state taxpayer funding for abortion. He later advocated for a ballot initiative in Colorado to stop taxpayer funding of abortions in the state. He was also a former special assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles, California. 15

Lois Cunningham, a registered nurse, is the director of crisis pregnancy outreach at the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform. She helped establish two medical clinics in Los Angeles County, in the cities of Glendale and Hollywood, and was the executive director from 1988 to 1995. Cunningham directed a task force to establish Choices Medical Clinic, which opened December 6, 1999 and is located in Wichita, Kansas next door to a late-term abortionist. 16

Fletcher Armstrong is the director of CBR Southeast. Fletcher was previously the president of Knox County chapter of Tennessee Right to Life, where he doubled the staff and budget of the organization in less than two years. 17

Abra Singleton is the director of CBR Southwest. She has been a veteran at volunteering for pro-life events. 18

Nick Rosendal is president of the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform, the Canadian arm of the organization. After six years working at an accounting firm, he began working for the organization as a financial and management adviser before working his way up to becoming the president. 19
