The Texas Coalition for Affordable Insurance Solutions is a state-level advocacy and professional association of major automobile and home insurance firms active in Texas. 1

Background

The Texas Coalition for Affordable Insurance Solutions was formed in 2002 and established as a tax-exempt business association in 2006 in Austin, Texas. Generally, the organization supports policies that would increase access to different insurance options and products, encourage price competition among insurance companies, reduce insurance costs, and reduce instances of insurance fraud and abuse. 1 2 3

Activities

The Texas Coalition for Affordable Insurance Solutions engages in policy advocacy campaigns. For instance, in 2003, just a year after it was formed, the organization hired the Quorum Public Affairs firm to oppose proposals made in the Texas legislature to reverse legislation passed the prior year, which had reduced some regulations on the insurance industry, in response to a rising number of mold-related insurance claims. The campaign included media as well targeted lobbying efforts of Texas legislature committee members involving “non-traditional allies” such as the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, which according to a case report published by the firm resulted in the proposed legislation not proceeding past consideration by the given committee. 3 1

The Texas Coalition for Affordable Insurance Solutions also publishes policy recommendations. For instance, in 2024 the organization recommended that the Texas legislature establish and enforce stronger building codes, increase regulations on contractors engaged in roofing, incentivize and encourage the installation of impact-resistant shingles, establish a grant program to assist individuals and communities build in accord with more rigorous construction standards, fund public fire safety educational initiatives, and more strictly enforce distracted driving statutes. 4

In addition to its advocacy and lobbying work, the Texas Coalition for Affordable Insurance Solutions also publishes resources and materials related to developments in insurance policy and technical aspects of insurance in general. For instance, on its website the organization offers a guide to the public, Texas Insurance 101, that gives an overview of the insurance industry, basics of homeowner and automobile insurance, insurance regulations in Texas, and commonly used insurance-terms. 5 6 7
