Planned Parenthood of Arizona (PPAZ) is a state-level affiliate of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. It is a nonprofit organization and activism group that is an abortion provider with centers across the state. 1 PPAZ promotes a variety of left-of-center causes; in the past, it has brought lawsuits to promote abortion access 2 and organized activist groups to enact an amendment to the Arizona state constitution to guarantee access to abortion. 3 PPAZ offers hormone treatment to the LGBT community, 4 trains and employs volunteers to give patients support after abortion, 5 and offers men vasectomies. 6

Services

Planned Parenthood of Arizona offers services to LGBT people, including hormone treatment, and provides referrals for gender reassignment surgery. 7 PPAZ provides a service called Doula, through which there are “trained, non-medical companions who provide emotional and physical care (including relaxation and stress management techniques)” after patients have had an abortion. 8 PPAZ also offers vasectomy services and does not provide for services to reverse the procedure. 9

Supreme Court Case

After the Supreme Court of the United States decision overturned Roe v. Wade, PPAZ filed a lawsuit, Planned Parenthood Arizona v. Mayes, against then-Arizona Governor Doug Ducey (R). 10 The basis of this case is to determine whether a law passed in 2022, originating from a law when Arizona was still a territory, could go into effect to ban most abortions. 11 The Arizona Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the case on December 12, 2023. 12

Sexual Health and Responsible Education Institute

Planned Parenthood of Arizona created the Sexual Health and Responsible Education Institute (SHARE) to provide sexual education to students and “Arizona youth.” 13 SHARE promotes LGBT acceptance for youth and uses information from the Trevor Project and the Guttmacher Institute. 14 SHARE also features videos, magazines, podcasts, and reading materials that, among other topics, promote abortion and LGBT issues. 15

Arizona for Abortion Access

Arizona for Abortion Access is a coalition ballot committee organized by Planned Parenthood of Arizona’s political action committee, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona, which includes the ACLU of Arizona, Affirm Sexual and Reproductive Health, Arizona List, Healthcare Rising Arizona, and Reproductive Freedom for All. 16

Arizona for Abortion Access’s ballot initiative would create a state constitutional right to get an abortion up until 24 weeks of a pregnancy. 17

People
