In 2007, Picture the Homeless filed a complaint against the New York City Police Department (NYPD), accusing it of violating civil rights law by targeting homeless people for arrests. A settlement was later reached, which forced the NYPD to publicly disclose its new regulations for policing New York’s transit system. 2

In 2009, Picture the Homeless staged a protest at a vacant lot owned by JPMorgan Chase on East 115th Street in Manhattan where demonstrators placed tents and a gazebo with a sign reading “A place to call home!” At least nine arrests were made after demonstrators refused to leave the property. 6

In 2010, activists with Picture the Homeless occupied a vacant property in the Bronx borough of New York City with the demand that the owner transfer the property title to the nonprofit organization’s community land trust. 7

Members of Picture the Homeless helped establish the activist group East Harlem/El Bario Community Land Trust in 2014. 8 9

    Partnerships

Picture the Homeless is listed as one of more than 40 ally organizations of Churches United for Fair Housing (CUFFH), a left-of-center New York City-based affordable housing-focused organization that engages in advocacy on immigration and economic policy. 10 11
