PNY’s claims to be focused on the advancement of “racial equity,” a left-of-center concept that calls for equal outcomes for individuals and ethnic groups. PNY writes that it has been working extensively to educate both its own staff and its members about “structural racism and its roots” in American history, culture, and institutions. It also links members to an array of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) consultants. 5 It claims to embed “equity” in “all” of its work, and it states that its official values revolve around helping its members work toward “a more equitable, sustainable, and democratic society.” 6
It provides multiple training sessions for nonprofit leaders, such as its “Leading With Race Equity” cohort to help them find ways to fight for racial equity internally and externally, its “Racial Equity Working Group” which calls philanthropic staffers to change their organization’s systems so that they can pursue racial equity, and a “Trust-Based Philanthropy” cohort which is led in tandem with affiliate groups to connect racial equity seminars to nonprofit best practice information sessions. 7
