Parents’ Rights in Education (PRIE) is a nonprofit advocacy organization that promotes the rights of parents within the public-school system. Founded in Oregon in 2011, PRIE has grown into a multi-state organization that represents millions of parent and allied voices. Parents’ Rights in Education aims to stop what it sees as the politicization of the U.S. education system and provide students with safe learning environments focused on academics. 1
Activities
Parents’ Rights in Education is a nonprofit advocacy organization that seeks to ensure that public schools inspire and unite all students as scholars in a safe learning environment. PRIE supports parents’ legal rights to send their children to public schools to learn academics without political indoctrination. 1 Founded in Oregon in 2011, Parents’ Rights in Education has 47 affiliates throughout the U.S. including Anchorage, Alaska and Bangor, Maine. 2
Parents’ Rights in Education claims that the public education system is being harmed by extreme fringe politics, including the using materials derived from Marxist doctrine. PRIE further claims that subjects like writing and even math are no longer being taught from a politically unbiased viewpoint and that the inclusion of ideologies like critical race theory are resulting in anti-American, anti-white, and anti-capitalist sentiments amongst students. 3
Parents’ Rights in Education argues that parents are entitled to the legal right to direct their children’s education while preventing the indoctrination of their children. Parents’ Rights in Education represents the voices of people from a diverse range of backgrounds and political beliefs, who all agree that public schools should be safe, constructive environments where students can grow and prosper. 1
Parents’ Rights in Education offers parents and allies either free or paid memberships that come with access to local leadership, trainings, events, and issue updates. PRIE also publishes stories and testimonials from its supporters, ranging from concerned grandparents to school board members to the director of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights Texas Chapter. 4
Parents’ Rights in Education publishes information on state and local school elections for school board positions, including details about upcoming elections, candidates, and elected officials. PRIE uses a rating system for candidates, elected school board members, and other elected officials that considers their priorities, with the highest scores going to those who value things like solid academics, parental choice, school safety, a parental bill of rights, and fighting politization in public schools. 5
Funding
Parents’ Rights in Education is funded by donations that it collects through its website. In 2022, PRIE reported $70,488 in revenue. 6
Parents’ Rights in Education is also funded by its “Club 12 x 12” membership, which is available for $12 a month and provides access beyond its free membership, including monthly online training sessions, one-on-one instruction, deals on PRIE events, and PRIE’s monthly newsletter. 7
