New Progressive Alliance (NPA) is a far-left political advocacy organization that promotes radical-left policies and legislation and claims alignment with and inspiration from the policies of the Populist Party platform of 1892, the Progressive Party platform of 1912, the Green Party, the Socialist Party USA, and United Progressives. 1

The organization is affiliated with other left-of-center groups including 350.org, Amnesty International, and Extinction Rebellion. 2

Background

New Progressive Alliance (NPA) is a far-left political advocacy organization that promotes radical-left legislation and policies. The organization, which is volunteer-based and operated online, was founded in 2010 as a reaction to the Democratic Party supposedly “forsaking” its “role as the leading voice for progressive ideals.” 3

NPA states that it models its “movement on the success of America’s first progressive era,” which is reflected in its “Unified Platform.” 4

Unified Platform

On its Unified Platform page, New Progressive Alliance states that its “proud heritage” is of the Populist Party platform of 1892, and the Progressive Party platform of 1912. It also uses “source material” from the Green Party, the Socialist Party USA, and United Progressives as a basis for the Unified Platform. 5

The Unified Platform calls for the “immediate withdrawal” of all United States military forces from “combat operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, and all other regional conflicts,” the dissolution of private security contracts for said conflicts, vacating any international military bases that the host country wishes, and reinvesting a large amount of the military budget into government-run education, arts, and sciences. 6

It also calls for a “living wage,” and alternatively a “universal basic income” which will be implemented via an “earned income credit or negative income tax.” NPA also promotes left-of-center policies on environmentalism, including switching from conventional energy to solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower, and the banning of hydraulic fracturing. 7

NPA supports the expansion and protection of Social Security, Medicaid, unemployment insurance, and Medicare-for-All, a proposed policy to create a government-run “single-payer” socialist healthcare system in the United States by expanding the existing Medicare program from covering primarily older individuals to covering all citizens. 8

The organization also calls for the replacement of the USA Patriot Act, the closure of Guantanamo Bay, and the legalization of marijuana. NPA calls for the abolishing the Electoral College, reducing the power of the Senate, and overturning the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling. 9

New Progressive Alliance states that it will only endorse candidates that fully support its Unified Platform. 10

Affiliated Organizations

New Progressive Alliance is a member of Declaration for American Democracy, a coalition of left-leaning activist groups that advocates a series of governmental and electoral administration policy changes. The coalition supports proposed legislation that would enact several left-leaning policy priorities surrounding elections including enacting automatic voter registration and placing restrictive regulations on political campaign-related speech acts. 11 12

NPA is also a supporter of Fossil Banks No Thanks, a left-of-center environmentalist organization that calls for the end of the “fossil fuel era” by immediately ending all conventional energy expansion financing from banks, phasing out ongoing funding of conventional energy projects, and immediately ending all financing for projects and companies that the organization claims “abuse human rights.” 13 14

New Progressive Alliance also lists several left-of-center organizations as “allies” on its website, stating that any organizations allied to NPA either fully or partially agree with its Unified Platform. These organizations include the large environmentalist organization 350.org, the human rights organization Amnesty International, the radical environmental activist organization Extinction Rebellion, and the environmental advocacy organization Sunrise Movement. 15
