The Mutual Housing Association of New York, Inc. (MHANY) is a nonprofit housing management organization that was created in the 1980s after the defunct left-of-center ACORN network organized squatters on city-owned properties in New York City. 1 2
Background
In 1987, local government officials in New York City were pressured by ACORN into transferring title in 58 city-owned and squatter-occupied buildings to the ACORN Housing nonprofit, which became Mutual Housing Association of New York in 1988. 1
In 1996, MHANY created MHANY Management, Inc., a separate nonprofit that has been largely responsible for MHANY’s operations since 2016. 3
