The Murad Family Foundation is the private grantmaking foundation of the Murad family, which principally derives its wealth from Murad Skincare, a skincare brand founded by Howard Murad. The foundation supports left-leaning health care, educational, and civic organizations, as well as a variety of California-based nonprofits.

Background

The Murad Family Foundation was founded as a private family foundation in El Segundo, California in June 2011. 1 The Murad family, members of which sit on foundation’s board of directors, largely derives its wealth from Murad Skincare, a skincare company founded by foundation board member Howard Murad, which was acquired in July 2015 by the multinational healthcare corporation Unilever for an undisclosed sum. 2 The foundation’s founder and president is Howard Murad’s daughter, Hilarie Murad, who notably took over management of Murad Skincare after her father’s retirement. 3 4

As of September 26, 2021, the foundation’s official website is inaccessible. 5

Grant Recipients

The Murad Family Foundation’s grants are largely disbursed to nonprofits oriented around health care, education, welfare, and civic causes, as well as California cultural and religious institutions. National recipient organizations include Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America, a youth mentoring organization; the Humane Society of the United States, a left-of-center organization that advocates for animal rights and vegetarianism; People Concern, a nonprofit that works to reduce homelessness; and the Boys and Girls Club of America, a national nonprofit that works with volunteers to provide after-school programs through local affiliate chapters. 6 7 8 9 10 11

Local California-based recipient organizations of the foundation include Venice Arts, the Waner Children’s Vascular Anomaly Foundation, the Murad After-School Program in Redondo Beach, California, and Temple Shalom of the South Bay. 12 13 14
