    Finances and Funding

In 2023, Mundo Gardens reported $212,039 in revenue and $254,572 in expenses, ending the year with $4,952 in assets. 5 That same year, the organization received a $7,500 grant from the East County Economic Development Council. 6

In 2023, the organization was awarded a $2 million planning grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Neighborhood Access and Equity Program. The funds support the National City/Southeast San Diego Greenspace Corridor Project, which proposes to repurpose 57 acres of freeway-adjacent infrastructure into green space, pedestrian paths, and affordable housing using a community land trust model. 2

    Activities and Advocacy

Mundo Gardens was initially created to manage community gardening within the National City region, but expanded towards environmental advocacy, regional development, and providing education opportunities combining art, cooking, nutrition, and music. 7

Mundo Gardens has previously with local and state agencies on environmental projects such as Caltrans (California Department of Transportation), the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), and the Port of San Diego.  7

In 2024, Mundo Gardens was one of three organizations in California awarded a grant through the federal “Reconnecting Communities: Highways to Boulevards” pilot program. The project was allegedly meant to provide funding to develop sections of San Diego to provide increased open green spaces and affordable housing.  8
