The Michigan Fair Elections Institute, also known as Michigan Fair Elections or MFE, is a federated network of grassroots organizations, leaders, and activists that supports free and fair elections in Michigan. 1 MFE aims to restore trust in Michigan elections by creating a permanent election integrity infrastructure in Michigan counties. MFE provides a platform for election integrity task forces to collaborate at the state and local levels to prevent voter fraud. 2

Members of the group’s board of directors have associations with the Republican Party. 3

Activities

Michigan Fair Elections supports free and fair elections in Michigan and is focused on enacting a permanent election integrity infrastructure through the creation of task forces at the state and local levels. MFE aims to have a state coalition that ensures the Secretary of State offices and Bureau of Elections comply with Michigan state election statutes as well at to create local task forces that oversee election operations at the county level. Michigan Fair Elections’ goal is to establish election accountability, transparency, and citizen oversight. 4

Michigan Fair Elections alleges that there are fundamental problems with Michigan’s current election system, which it says allowed nearly 2,000 ineligible votes in 2020. Michigan Fair Elections claims that the Michigan Secretary of State’s training manuals violate the law by teaching clerks to count absentee ballots that are not the ballots mailed to the voter. MFE further claims that Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) used the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) system to effectively register more voters than there were eligible, creating a voter registration rate over 100%. 5

Volunteers of the MFE task forces at both the state and local level focus on technology and voting systems, protecting vulnerable voters, the interactions between ballot drop boxes and the U.S. Postal Service with election offices, legal compliance and enforcement, and legislative solutions. 6

In 2024, Michigan Fair Elections and the Wisconsin Voter Alliance submitted an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the 27 Pennsylvania legislators in the lawsuit Keefer v. Biden. The brief supported the constitutional rights of elected legislators to determine election law. 7
