Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations (Maryland Nonprofits) assists nonprofit groups throughout Maryland by providing training, budget and legislative advice, and consulting services. Maryland Nonprofits has argued that structural racism pervades public and private sector organizations, advances teaching about colonialism in the United States, and called the killing of George Floyd a public lynching at police hands. 1 Maryland Nonprofits calls for supporting the transgender movement by creating safe spaces in the workplace and in communications.
History
Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations was incorporated in 1991 and founded in 1992 with 139 charter members. 2 In 1998, it launched the Standards for Excellence Program and the Maryland Budget and Tax Policy Institute. 2 In 2001, Maryland Nonprofits began an Advocacy Leaders Program and a Standards for Excellence Institute in 2004. 2 In 2005, it formed a consulting division. 2
By 2010, Maryland Nonprofits consisted of over 1,000 organizations. 2 As of 2021, it stated that it had more than 1400 members. 3
Programs
Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations provides resources on raising money for startups, nonprofit growth, and consistent nonprofit assessment. 4 It provides guidance on strengthening boards of directors and advocating for an organization’s mission. 5 It also administers a Nonprofit Accelerator on operations and capacity building, a Development Center to assist new nonprofits with guidance, a library with technical and practical information, and a service provider directory. 6 Maryland Nonprofits also provides customized, individual consulting advice to nonprofits on various topics. 7
Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations runs a Standards for Excellence Program that provides online resources, a Standards for Excellence Institute that provides online training on best practices, and awards accreditation for nonprofits that have implemented best practices. 8 It offers annual conferences with the 2021 conference focused on equity. 9
Maryland Budget and Tax Policy Institute (MBTPI) is a project of Maryland Nonprofits that analyzes and provides updates on the Maryland and federal legislative budget and policy issues. 10 MBTPI notes that addressing tax inequalities should be a priority and provides guidance to policy makers on how policy matters could impact the financial well-being of Maryland residents. 11
Positions
Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organization states its vision is to create a highly effective, ethical, and equitable nonprofit sector that drives change through advocacy and collective action. 12 In 2022, it congratulated Governor Wes Moore (D) on his election; the president and CEO of Maryland Nonprofits had contributed more than $1,000 to his campaign. 13
Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations has stated structural racism pervades the public and private sectors. 9 It states that it has an intentional commitment to truth-telling about the legacies of colonization, Jim Crow laws, and systemic racism in Maryland and the United States. 9 It called the 2020 death of George Floyd in Minnesota a “public lynching…at police hands.” 1
The June 2023 monthly meeting of Maryland Nonprofits focused on transgender rights and how organizations can create safe spaces in the workplace, programs, and communications. 14
Finances
In 2021, Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations had net assets of $212,672. 15 According to the organization’s tax returns, in 2021 Maryland Nonprofits recorded $3,701,384 in revenue and $3,728,132 in expenses. 15 In 2020, the Maryland Nonprofits raised $2,575,181 in revenue and $2,315,965 in expenses. 16
Funding to the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations includes donations from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Meyer Foundation, as well as other nonprofits, companies, and individuals. 17
Leadership
Heather Iliff has been president and CEO of Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations since at least 2014 and worked for the organization since 2007. 18 From 2002-2007, Iliff was deputy director for education for Alliance for Nonprofit Management. 19 Previously, Iliff spent nine years working for George Soros’ Open Society Institute in various capacities. 19 Iliff spent four years as a member of the Prince George’s County Board of Education. 20
