Background
In 1984 Janie Spahr founded the Marin AIDS Support Network in response to the AIDS epidemic in Marin County, California. The organization provided support services to individuals with HIV/AIDS. The name was later changed to the Marin AIDS Project (MAP). 4
In 2015, MAP merged with Spectrum, which was founded by Spahr as the Ministry of Light in 1982 to provide LGBT support services in Marin County. In 1993, it was renamed as the Spectrum LGBT Center. 4 The merger was completed to streamline expenses and processes. MAP and Spectrum continued as projects within the Spahr Center. 1
Programs
Marin AIDS Project provided support to individuals with HIV/AIDS. Programs and services included home healthcare, medical case management, benefits counseling and advocacy, mental health counseling, emergency financial assistance, emergency prescription assistance, transportation services, and prevention and education services, 5 which included HIV testing, a needle exchange program, condom distribution, and educational support groups. 3
The Spahr Center
In 2015 Spectrum and Marin AIDS Project announced a merger to a single non-profit organization to streamline costs and processes. 1 Spectrum and MAP continued as programs offered by the Spahr Center, which provides support services to the LGBT community in California’s North Bay area. 2 The boards of directors of Spectrum and MAP merged to a single board for the new organization. 1
Financials
The last tax return filed by Marin AIDS Project was for the fiscal year ending in June 2014. MAP had a total revenue of $726,258 and total expenses of $795,019. 3

Most of Marin AIDS Project’s funding came from federal funds through the Ryan White CARE Act. These funds decreased starting in 2008 due to federal funding cuts. 1 The Ryan White CARE Act was created in 1990 to help communities and families cope with the AIDS epidemic. 7
Other donors to MAP were Broadway Cares–Equity Fights AIDS Inc., Comer Foundation, San Francisco AIDS Foundation, and Marin Community Foundation. 8
