Legal Voice advocates for left-leaning abortion, social services, and health care policies in the northwest United States, including Alaska. The group has advocated for Medicaid coverage and unemployment insurance for illegal immigrants. 1

It has claimed on a blog post, “white supremacy is deeply embedded in every system we both work and live within.” 2

Background

Kelli Maguire is listed as the co-director of operations, and Riddhi Mukhopadyay is listed as the co-director of advocacy, as of March 2024. Deborah Klein was listed as president and Neha Nariya was president-elect on Legal Voice’s 2022 tax form. 3

Ideology

Legal Voice is mentioned as a partner on the website of The Alliance, a group advocating for left-of-center ideals such as intersectionality and inclusion. 4 The Alliance describes Legal Voice as “a progressive feminist organization using the power of the law to make change for women and LGBTQ people in five Northwest states: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.” 5

According to its website, Legal Voice strives to achieve “gender liberation” by “challeng[ing] patriarchal and racist power structures.” 6

Legal Voice wrote in a February 2023 blog post that it “started to implement and center an anti-racism lens in every aspect of [its] work.” It stated, “The work will never be done, as white supremacy is deeply embedded in every system we both work and live within, including our organizations endeavoring to make the world a better place.” 2

Policy Positions

Legal Voice’s 2024 priorities in Washington state included extending unemployment insurance benefits and funding a “Medicaid-like program” for an additional 25,000 illegal immigrants. 1 The group also supported HB 1045, which proposed a pilot program of unrestricted cash payments for two years to eligible low-income or homeless Washingtonians and those experiencing domestic violence. 1

Legal Voice’s 2024 legislative include opposing a bill in Idaho that would replace the term “fetus” with “preborn child” and two bills in Washington state, one of which would require health insurance to cover infertility diagnosis and treatment and another that would ensure that hospital mergers “don’t negatively impact your healthcare,” which they say especially impacts people in rural communities and racial minorities. 1

In 2023, Legal Voice represented advocacy groups who filed a lawsuit against the office of Idaho Attorney General Raul Labrador (R-ID) alleging that a law criminalizing the transport of minors across state lines to get an abortion violates the U.S. constitution and is too vague to be enforced. 7

Financials

In 2022, Legal Voice reported a revenue of $2,347,548 and total lobbying expenditures of $6,894. It reported net assets without donor restrictions of $2,202,903 and with donor restrictions of $479,407. 3
