The Jubitz Family Foundation is an Oregon-based left-of-center grantmaking foundation that provides funding to environmentalist and anti-war causes.
Background
The foundation was founded by Albin Jubitz Jr. in 2001 after the sale of DAT services, a company founded by his father. 1 The Jubitz family made its fortune as the founders of Jubitz Corporation, which owns and operates truck stops. 2
Activities
The foundation provides grants to various left-leaning organizations. Recipients in 2021 included Advocates for the West, the Council on Strategic Risks, FCNL Education Fund, the Foundation for National Progress, Nonviolent Peaceforce, Ploughshares Fund, and Win Without War Education Fund. 3
The Jubitz Family Foundation funds Nimiipuu Protecting the Environment, a Native American environmentalist organization that advocates for the treaty rights of the Nez Perce tribe and speaks out against dams on the Snake River. 4 5
The foundation has provided support to Inkstick Media, which criticizes Israel and calls for the recognition of Palestine as a country. 6
One of the Jubitz Family Foundation’s programs is the War Prevention Initiative, which shares staff and office space. 7 This calls for an end to militarism and has published arguments against certain aid to Ukraine, 8 a “feminist critique of military heritage,” 9 and endorsed the idea that sports can help avoid war. 10 The War Prevention Initiative has added a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to its traditional anti-military viewpoint and claims that the worldwide culture is one of white supremacy. 11
Funding
The foundation’s sole donors listed on publicly available findings in 2020 and 2021 were Al and Nancy Jubitz, who contributed more than $1 million during each year. 3 4 Potential grantees of the foundation are instructed to apply only if they are invited to do so. 12
