Angell Family Foundation, we’ve been able to successfully rebuild our program following a year-long pause duringthe first year of the pandemic. Our next step is building on this foundation and taking our work to uncharted heights over the next three years. Most centrally, this will involve the launch of our Fatherhood For All initiative and scaling our programmatic capacity by 500% to serve 450 fathers per year throughout the city of Chicago. In addition to the expansion of our programmatic footprint, Dovetail is developing our infrastructure to serve as a citywide hub for fatherhood information, engagement, services, and resources—from providing fathers and families with essential goods, to educating fathers in the classroom, to connecting them with needed therapeutic and legal services. This work will not only play a transformative role in the lives of thousands of fathers and families here in Chicago, but will provide new models for moving the field of fatherhood forward on a national scale by illuminating the evolving needs of young fathers in the post-pandemic world as well as innovative strategies for engaging these fathers and meeting those needs. We see the development of new models of research and evaluation and stakeholder engagement with practitioners, community leaders, policymakers, philanthropists, and other key stakeholders as an essential part of our strategic vision. The success of this strategic vision will require developing our organizational infrastructure to achieve this rapid programmatic growth in a stable and sustainable fashion. The Dovetail Project is seeking capital to support thescaling of our infrastructure as we translate this bold and transformative vision for our organization and the field of fatherhood into reality. |
| $225,000 | 2021 | Paul M. Angell Family Foundation | The Dovetail Project has 529 graduates to date, with our first class since the pandemic graduating in June 2021. Founded by and for young Black fathers, our culturally competent program has expanded to address the unique needs of Latinx fathers as well. Students receive a stipend, meals and bus fare; educational opportunities such as GED and/or community college; job readiness skills such as resume/interview preparation and trade/career counseling; and felony street law education to avoid incarceration. Due to the pandemic, we canceled classes for all of 2020 and pivoted to resource distribution for vulnerable young families by launching the Fatherhood Relief Fund (FRF). During the Fund's first year, we impacted 4,000 families with essential goods such as diapers, wipes, and baby formula. As we approach our second pandemic winter in which the families we serve continue to be the most impacted by COVID-19, we will continue providing support through the Fund while also continuing our signature fatherhood classes. We request general operating funding for 4 major components of this work: 1. Distribution of essential goods through the FRF. 2. Maintaining our fatherhood classes, increasing number of students served only once it is safe to do so. Our hope is to return to and eventually exceed pre-pandemic class sizes within two years, which will depend on COVID-19 conditions. 3. Expanding our office space. For the safety of our students and staff, we are now conducting classes on-site, rather than relying on shared rental locations. We remained in our original office for our spring 2021 class, which meant keeping the class small (only 12 students). We'll need more space to serve more students at a safe distance. 4. Retaining our key staff members and making key new hires over the next two years. As the world opens up, we must make sure we have the people we need to re-enter normal operations successfully and continue to impact our vulnerable population. |

Students receive a stipend, meals and bus fare; educational opportunities such as GED and/or community college enrollment; job readiness skills such as resume/interview preparation and trade/career counseling; and felony street law education to avoid incarceration. Due to the pandemic, we canceled our spring 2020 class and pivoted to resource distribution for vulnerable young families by launching the Fatherhood Relief Fund. While we help fathers feed themselves and their children this year, at the same time we are seeking to ensure that our in-person programming successfully re-launches next year. Strong families will be an essential component of rebuilding our city after COVID-19, and fathers are an essential component of those families. To support a successful program re-launch in 2021 and ensure our organizational growth and stability, we request general operating funding for three major components: 1. Re-hiring of key staff members. We were forced to reduce our staff size by 30% due to COVID-19; we seek to re-hire individuals who are critical to our ability to communicate, fundraise, and operate daily. 2. Expanding our office space. In order to ensure the health and safety of our students, we plan to conduct future programs on-site, rather than relying on Park District locations that are shared by many others. We'll need to rent more space to do this, which will increase our rent budget. 3. Digitizing our workbook. Our curriculum is currently delivered in-person with a paper workbook. We seek to digitize our curriculum and expand access opportunities for fathers. |
