The Global Critical Literacy Media Project (GCLMP) is a left-of-center joint venture project between the Action Coalition for Media Education (ACME) and Project Censored—both of which are organizations that are active in the left-leaning political education sphere, with a strong focus on targeting students. 1

The Global Critical Literacy Media Project promotes left-of-center positions and blanket criticism of corporate-owned. 2

History

Global Critical Literacy Media Project was created in 2015 by Action Coalition for Media Education and Project Censored to form an umbrella organization through which students, teachers, professors, and left-of-center activists to work together to promote the two organizations’ anti-business and left-leaning brand of “media consumption/production education to high-school, college, and university students.” 3 GCLMP’s objective appears to be the expansion of Project Censored’s program of critiquing corporate owned media from within academics and the utilization of labor, resources, and ideas on how to further develop their mission from non-Project Censored affiliated members and organizations. 4

Lessons

How to Find a News Article

Global Critical Literacy Media Project instructs teachers to create assignments for students where they analyze an online news article along five points: how many people it impacts, timeliness, how fact-based the information is, whether the mainstream for-profit media “ignored or underreported the story,” and whether other outlets provide contrary or more information than the selected article. 5

Experiential Learning Through Political Activism

Global Critical Literacy Media Project quotes famous Marxist academic Paulo Freire, stating that “schooling is primarily a form of social control in which the forms of pedagogy normalize subjects to take up places as skilled citizens in the given social order. Education serves as a form of potential transformation in which the forms of pedagogy allow for active subjects committed to self-and social empowerment.” 6

Activism is encouraged through blog writing and “becoming the media,” a term which refers to increased political activism through active participation on issues relevant in the news. 7

Digging Deeper

Global Critical Literacy Media Project teaches students business-owned media engages in “mass deception” and that they are complicit in the deception unless they actively fight against it. 8 GCLMP claims that corporate media and the George W. Bush administration colluded together to propagate disinformation that led to the Iraq War. GCLMP makes the outlandish claim that corporate media, in exchange for government tax breaks, military contracts, and relaxed media ownership rules, actively disseminates propaganda at the behest of the government. 9

Leadership

Julie Frechette, a professor of media studies at Worcester University in Massachusetts, is the current principal officer of ACME,10 one of the two co-founding organizations of GCLMP. 11 Frechette teaches media studies, critical cultural studies, media education, and gender representation. 12

Mickey Huff is the director of Project Censored and president of the Media Freedom Foundation. He is a professor of social science and history at Diablo Valley College. 13
