The Gender Health Center (GHC) is a physical and mental health support organization for transgender individuals. GHC provides therapy to members as well as guidance for navigating healthcare and legal issues pertaining to transgender individuals, including the process of gender transitioning. It also hosts the Black Trans Power Fund. 1
Black Trans Power Fund
The Gender Health Center hosts the Black Trans Power Fund which collects funds to help Black transgender individuals with groceries, child care, fuel, and other expenses. The fund was initially a one-time event but was relaunched permanently in 2023. During the most recent donations drive, the fund raised over $10,000. One major donor was the Sacramento Rainbow Chamber of Commerce. 2
Funding
In 2019, the Gender Health Center earned $1,320,748 in revenue, of which about $1.1 million came from donations, and almost $92,000 came from paid services. It spent $1,176,697 and had $180,371 in assets. 3
Criticism
The Gender Health Center has been criticized by former employees for inefficiency and bad leadership. According to one former employee, the GHC’s number of patient meetings declined from around 300 to about 100 annually from 2019 to 2020 despite a tripling of the organization’s budget. Other former employees accused the GHC’s leadership of having a lack of experience and being disconnected from the transgender community. 4
