Friends of United Nations Fund for Population Activities (Friends of UNFPA) is the U.S.-based support nonprofit for the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (commonly called the UN Population Fund). The New York-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit uses its funds to support programs of the UN Population Fund regarding abortion, birth control, and family planning. 1

Background

Friends of UNFPA was established in 1998 2 and works worldwide to support pregnancy healthcare, abortion funding, and family planning services. 3 The organization funds access to family planning and tries to reduce barriers to using contraception. 4

Friends of UNFPA worked with over 155 countries to distribute 1.1 billion condoms in 2018. 5 The organization claims that 8.9 million “unsafe abortions” were averted thanks to family planning services and supplies provided by UNFPA in 2018. 6 The organization claims that its work in family planning and contraception reduces the number of abortions. 7

Disputes with Republican Administrations

Friends of UNFPA wrote that the work of their parent organization, UNPFA was defunded in 2002 by the George W. Bush administration. 8 In 2017, the Trump administration cut funding to the parent organization as part of the funding cuts to any organization the administration alleges is involved in abortion. 9
