The Center on Colfax (also known as the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center of Colorado or simply the Center) is a LGBT-focused nonprofit based in Denver, Colorado. 1 The organization is Colorado’s largest LGBT group, and runs several programs directed towards promoting and celebrating LGBT culture. 2
History
In 1972, five individuals, Gerald Gerash, Lynn Tamlin, Terry Mangan, Jane Dundee and Mary Sassatelli, formed the Gay Coalition of Denver (GCD) to address perceived police discrimination against gay men. Through legal action and community organizing, GCD successfully repealed laws, and Gerash lead the formation of Unity, a community center and precursor to the Center on Colfax. The Gay Community Center of Colorado (GCCC) (the addition of “Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender” occurred later) was incorporated in 1977. 1
Programs
The Center on Colfax offers a range of services for LGBT people of differing age ranges. Its adult and transgender support programs provide counseling, health and wellness services, legal advocacy, and community-building events, all housed within a central community center that also includes a library and clinic access. The Center also operates a youth drop-in center that offers health resources, counseling, peer-led activities, and referrals for LGBT youth and their allies. 3
The Center produces Denver PrideFest and the Denver Pride Parade, the largest LGBT events in the Rocky Mountain region. These events are held annually at Civic Center Park and are designed to celebrate and promote LGBT culture in Colorado. 3
Other programs offered by the Center include screenings for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections; the LGBTQ History Project; Adult Range Education focused on Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) workshops; a program for LGBTQ+ older adults called West of 50; Rainbow Alley for youth aged 10-17; Saga for young adults aged 18-24; and its Transgender Program. 3
As part of a broader trend of corporate pullback from LGBT-related sponsorships, Denver Pride experienced a sharp decline in financial support in 2025. According to Natalie Zanoni, who was working as interim CEO of the Center on Colfax as of April 2025, returning corporate sponsors had reduced their contributions by an average of 62 percent. The resulting shortfall left the Center, which organizes the Denver Pride celebration, facing a $230,000 funding deficit. 4
Financials
In 2023, the Center on Colfax reported total revenue of $3,774,850 and total expenses of $3,801,072, resulting in a deficit of $26,222 for the year. The organization held $4,856,097 in total assets and $766,526 in liabilities, with net assets totaling $4,089,571 at year end. 5
