The Center for Farmworker Families is a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies that benefit farmworkers in Mexico and the United States with a focus on farmworkers in California, of which it said 60 percent to 80 percent are working without legal authorization. 1

Center for Farmworker Families sponsors tours for media to expose what it calls the “terrible”  conditions under which migrant workers are employed. 2

Center for Farmworker Families has worked on passing legislation to give overtime pay to farmworkers and to extend the Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations to California farms. 3 The center also supports the unionization of farmworkers. 4

Funding

Center for Farmworker Families received $1.2 million in gifts, grants, contributions, and membership fees in 2020. 5 From 2016 to 2019, Center for Farmworker Families received a combined $266,478 in gifts, grants, contributions, and membership fees. 6

In September 2021, New Leaf Community Markets made a $15,000 donation to Center for Farmworker Families. 7 The money was used to provide farmworkers with rental assistance, food, household goods, school supplies, and clothing for their children. 8

Leadership

As of 2023, Ann Lopez was the executive director of the Center for Farmworker Families. 9 She was a professor in the biology department of the San Jose City College. 10

Lopez was a doctoral student at University of California at Santa Cruz when she founded the Center for Farmworker Families in 2008. 11 She was studying the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on immigrants and was moved by the struggles of migrant workers. 12

Activities

Unionization of Farmworkers
The Center has supported the unionization of farmworkers. Lopez participated in a forum discussion with Teresa Romero, president of United Farm Workers, about the unionization of farmworkers in August 2022 on KALW. 13 Lopez said the unionization of farmworkers was “certainly needed.” 14 She said only unionization could solve some of working conditions issues farmworkers face. 15

Opposition to Pesticides
Executive director Ann Lopez claimed in 2016 that a review of 200 studies “conclusively links” pesticide exposure with rural children’s neurological health. 16 Lopez called the use of pesticides on farms a “human rights disaster” in 2019. 17

Center for Farmworker Families posted on Facebook on October 6, 2022 to urge people to get the government to stop using pesticides and “go organic.” 18 The Facebook post urged people to show up at a public hearing at the Watsonville City Council in California to protest the use of pesticides. 19

California’s 50-Mile Rule

The state of California has a 50-mile rule that is used to determine who qualifies to live in 24 state-subsidized migrant housing centers. 20 For workers to keep their eligibility, they had to move at least 50 miles away for several months out of the year and then return for the next harvest. 21

Center for Farmworker Families sponsored an exemption 22 in 2018 that allowed up to half of all migrant worker housing to be exempt if needed by families with children in K-12 schools. 23 The exemption meant that many migrant families had to move their children out of school mid-year. 24

Claims of Assault on Farmworker Family Structure

In an August 2018 blog post, Center for Farmworker Families claimed migrant family structure has been under attack “since family members first set foot in the state of California.” 25

Center for Farmworker Families listed several “mechanisms” that fracture migrant workers’ families. 26

The center stated some of the policies that fractured families included the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), then-President Donald Trump’s policy of separating children from parents coming from Mexico seeking asylum, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and then-President Trump’s threat to revoke Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). 27

International Humanities Center

The Center for Farmworker Families previously used the International Humanities Center to handle donations and accounting. 28 The nonprofit lost $5,000 in donations and a $6,000 grant when the International Humanities Center shut down, shuttered its officers, and took down its website with no warning in 2012. 29
