The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is a network of independently owned nonprofit organizations across the U.S. and Canada that promotes marketplace trust. BBB has been overseen by the International Association of Better Business Bureaus (IABBB) since 2020. Until 2019, the BBB was overseen by the Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB), which was established as a nonprofit in 1918. 1

Activities

The International Association of Better Business Bureaus is the nonprofit umbrella organization representing local Better Business Bureaus offices across the U.S. and Canada. The mission of the IABBB is to advance marketplace trust by promoting business self-regulation and helping local BBBs succeed. By supporting honest business practices that engage and educate consumers, the IABBB seeks to increase consumer confidence. 2

The Better Business Bureau provides resources for consumers that include tips, scam alerts, dispute resolution, and BBB Accredited business listings. The BBB also provides consumers with the ability to file complaints, leave reviews, and get quotes from BBB Accredited businesses. 3

For businesses, the Better Business Bureau provides resources for both BBB Accredited and non-Accredited businesses to help build consumer trust. The BBB allows all businesses to be listed in its online directory, receive consumer reviews, professional development opportunities, and help running businesses. BBB provides its Accredited businesses with the BBB seal, allows businesses to be part of its “Get A Quote” program, and offers access to networking and local services. 4

Funding

The Better Business Bureau is funded primarily by annual dues from accredited businesses. These dues are collected by local BBB offices and submitted to the IABBB. The IABBB reported more than $14 million in dues revenue in 2023. 5
