In 2024, the Assurant Foundation disbursed over $3.8 million in grants to over 1,800 organizations. 1
In 2020, the Assurant Foundation, among others, provided funding for a Human Rights Campaign-led study that surveyed Black LGBT individuals on their socioeconomic statuses and the extent to which they believe they have faced discrimination. The survey was conducted by Community Marketing and Insights and the Center for Black Equity, and the Human Rights Campaign reported that it used an “intersectional statistical model,” interpreting the data to argue that Black LGBT individuals are more likely to be discriminated against than whites. 2
The study argued that Black LGBT individuals were likely to face discrimination in obtaining housing, health care, and employment. In response, it advocated state and federal officials to “reshape” budgets and to create task forces. It also provided guidance on how individuals and organizations should attempt to eliminate so-called “stigma and violence” against Black LGBT individuals; eliminate racism, transphobia, and homophobia; and incorporate Black LGBT individuals into leadership positions. 2
In 2021, the Assurant Foundation made a $27,400 grant to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. 3
Between 2019 and 2025, the Assurant Foundation disbursed $165,000 in grants to the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Foundation’s Workforce Initiative. 1 The Assurant Foundation disbursed the grants in coordination with Assurant Global Automotive, a subsidiary of Assurant that offers warranties and insurance plans to dealerships. The NADA’s Workforce Initiative, in partnership with the Assurant Foundation, recruits skilled laborers to work in the automotive industry and to pursue careers as service technicians. 4
In support of diversity initiatives, the Assurant Foundation funds science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs that engage in outreach, soliciting women and young people to seek careers in STEM. 1
The Assurant Foundation’s “digital inclusion” grantmaking program funds programs that distribute cellphones, laptops, and other devices to individuals and communities it believes face greater difficulty in obtaining them on their own. In support of environmentalism, it funds and organizes laptop and phone collections to be redistributed and “reused” by disadvantaged groups. The reused devices are redistributed to apply the concept of a “circular economy.” 1
The Assurant Foundation’s “disaster relief” makes grants to organizations such as the American Red Cross as well as environmentalist efforts that organize trash clean-up and tree-planting events. Listed under its disaster relief programming, the Assurant Foundation partnered with AT&T and the Arbor Day Foundation to encourage AT&T customers to donate their used phones to fund tree planting in response to California wildfires in 2024. 1
Monica Bomani has worked as the director of the Assurant Foundation since 2019. She previously worked as a manager of global social responsibility for Abbott, a manager of global community investments for McDonald’s, and as a senior grants manager for Oprah Winfrey Philanthropies. 5
