All of Us Or None (AOUON) is a community organizing project of the left-of-center Legal Services for Prisoners with Children (LSPC). LSPC advocates to the California state legislature ¹ on policies that seek to defund police departments, reduce policing, and limit police officer independence in making arrests. ² AOUON has local chapters across the country. ³

Background

All of Us Or None was formed in 2003. ⁴ Unlike Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, AOUON’s parent organization, AOUON operates throughout the country through a state chapter model. ⁵

The organization claims that policing in the United States has a “white supremacy problem,” ⁶ and has stated that “defunding the police” must refer to more than merely local police departments and include reduced budgets for prisons, the probation system, and prosecutors. ⁷

Family Unity Project

All of Us Or None’s Family Unity Project is a program that seeks to expand welfare spending for individuals in the carceral system, articulated in the form of a “Bill of Rights for Incarcerated Parents,” ⁸ that would increase welfare spending in prisons to include alternatives to incarceration for pregnant women, ⁹ grant required visitations by children of incarcerated individuals, ¹⁰ establish a right for incarcerated parents to be made aware of important decisions made in their child’s life and to have their input solicited, ¹¹ and confer a right to social workers that create a rapport between incarcerated parents and their children’s legal guardians. ¹²

Opposition to Work for Prisoners

All of Us Or None opposes mandatory labor for prisoners, referring to the practice as “indentured servitude.” ¹³ It has advocated that the California legislature abolish mandatory labor in prisons. ¹⁴ The group has referred to formerly incarcerated individuals as “retired slaves.” ¹⁵

Felon Voting

All of Us Or None engages in voter registration and get out the vote (GOTV) efforts across the country, and specifically targets former inmates in states where released felons and individuals on felony parole are entitled to vote. ¹⁶ In addition to GOTV activity, AOUON and Legal Services for Prisoners with Children supported California Proposition 17, an amendment to the California constitution that allowed individuals on felony parole to vote. ¹⁷

Leadership

All of Us Or None and its parent organization, Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, share the same leadership. ¹⁸ Dorsey Nunn is the executive director of LSPC. ¹⁹ Prior to leading the organization, Nunn was a paralegal, community organizer, and program manager for LSPC. ²⁰ Nunn received the White House Champion of Change reward from President Barack Obama and the Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition by Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). ²¹
