Advance Arlington is a civil-society nonprofit that promotes discussion of issues facing Arlington County, Virginia, an inner-ring suburb of Washington, D.C. 1

History and Background

Advance Arlington was founded in 1954 as the “Arlington Committee of 100” by local leaders who were concerned about the “polarization that had developed in Arlington’s civic and political life after World War II” as the region’s population grew quickly in pace with the expanding federal government in neighboring Washington, D.C. 2

According to the organization’s account of its own history, fragmented communication among different segments of the community in the early 1950s had generated misinformation and antagonism within the county.  2 Newcomers largely wanted expanded public services, while existing residents and business owners broadly opposed the tax increases necessary to fund expanded government programs.  3

The Arlington Committee of 100’s influence grew over time, with a 1987 profile in the Washington Post characterized it as playing “a pivotal role in Arlington’s civic life” and credited it with quietly influencing government policy through its choice of topics to feature in its bimonthly programs. 3

Programs

Advance Arlington continues the Arlington Committee of 100’s practice of holding in-person and online panel discussions on topics related to government and civil society in the region. 4

Program topics in the 2020s have included the structure of Arlington County’s board, Virginia’s “Right-to-Work” law which prohibits making union fee-payments a condition of employment, Medicaid and SNAP funding implications for the region, housing affordability, ranked-choice voting, tariffs, demographics, gender issues in the county’s workforce, the state of journalism in the region, artificial intelligence, historic preservation, mental-health care policy, and political candidate forums.  4

While Advance Arlington is ostensibly nonpartisan and its panels generally feature a range of opinions, its program topics broadly tend to focus on issues of interest to left-of-center activists such as gender issues in the workforce, economic “inclusivity,” and racial and ethnic diversity among the region’s elected officials. 4

Financials

Advance Arlington is funded largely through sponsorships, memberships, and event ticket fees. As of 2026, its highest sponsorship level was $2,500. 5

As of 2026, an annual membership to the organization cost $75. 6

Advance Arlington received its 501(c)(3) charitable tax exemption from the IRS in April 2024, but as of March 2026 had not filed a tax return detailing its finances. 7
