Past Present Future Consulting and Media is an consulting company based in Des Moines, Iowa that provides critical race theory-aligned racial equity training and consulting services to public and private organizations, with a focus on elite public schools. Background

Past Present Future Consulting and Media LLC was formed on June 17, 2021, when it was registered by Katy Swalwell with the Iowa Secretary of State’s office. 2 Swalwell often works with Daniel Spikes on consulting contracts. They co-facilitate training, coaching, and other consulting services that work toward removing implicit bias and racial inequities in the educational system. 3

Consulting Services

Past Present Future Consulting and Media provides interactive workshops and coaching on critical race theory-aligned racial equity issues, practices, and curricula; curriculum planning and review to ensure that left-progressive social justice curricula are supported; and equity audits to identify areas of racial inequity in school programs and make recommendations for correction. 4

Clients

From 2018 to 2021, Swalwell and Spikes were paid more than $232,000 from Ames Community School District in Iowa for equity consulting services, training, professional development, and equity audits. Activities included a Black Lives Matter at School week and a variety of training and development forums. 5

In 2020, Clear Creek Amana Community School District in Iowa paid $10,800 to Swalwell and Spikes for a series of book club facilitation meetings on racial equity for district leaders and school board members. 6

Starting June 7, 2021, Swalwell taught a multi-week class on the history of anti-black racism in Iowa for the Ankeny Community School District. 7 She has facilitated workshops on implicit bias and the history of anti-Black racism in Iowa with the ​Iowa Department of Human Services and Juvenile Court System and the Mason City Police Department in Mason City, Iowa. 8

Consultants

Katy Swalwell

Katy Swalwell is the owner of Past Present Future Consulting and Media. She is also a Lead Equity Specialist at Equity Literacy Institute since July 2021. 9 Equity Literacy Institute is a racial equity consulting firm. 10

Swalwell earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Wisconsin at Madison. From 2011 to 2021 she held faculty positions at George Mason University, the University of Maryland-College Park, and Iowa State University. 11

As a full-time consultant, Swalwell’s focus is on anti-oppressive education with a special focus on schools serving predominantly white, affluent students. 12

Swalwell has published several books, including Educating Activist Allies: Social Justice Pedagogy with the Urban and Suburban Elite, which focuses on the ways in which social justice curricula can be incorporated into communities of privilege, 13 and Social Studies for A Better World: An Anti-Oppressive Guide for Elementary Educators, co-authored with Noreen Naseem Rodríguez. 14

Swalwell cohosts a podcast with Mandy Griffin called Our Dirty Laundry. It is based on the premise that white women are complicit in the continuation of white supremacy and racist oppression. 15

Daniel Spikes

Daniel Spikes earned his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. He is an assistant professor in the School of Education at Iowa State University. 16

Swalwell and Spikes co-edited a book entitled Anti Oppressive Education in Elite Schools: Promising Practices and Cautionary Tales from the Field. This book explores ways to implement anti-oppressive education in elite schooling environments. It defines elite schools as those “imbued with wealth and whiteness.” 17
