Acadia Energy Corporation (AEC) is a for-profit company that constructs solar, wind, geothermal, and natural gas-based microgrids across the state of New York. 1 2
Background
Acadia Energy Corporation was founded in 2016. 3 The company employs “sustainability hubs” as part of its microgrid model. These sustainability hubs are intended to directly power neighborhoods, as opposed to other microgrid applications that AEC claims are often diverted to surrounding areas. As of May 2024, AEC has constructed 1.4 gigawatts, or 1,400 megawatts of weather-dependent, geothermal, and “clean natural gas” power in upstate New York. 4
AEC claims that its microgrid model reduces energy costs for homeowners, creates jobs, and improves the quality of life across New York state. 4
TakeChargeNY is AEC’s non-profit arm, which gained its tax-exempt status in 2024. 5 6
Activities
In 2024, Acadia Energy Corporation began a partnership with Alternus Clean Energy, an international solar energy development firm. This partnership set out to construct microgrid projects across the state of New York amounting to 200 megawatts of weather-dependent power. 7
