International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA) is an organization of more than 100 medical regulatory authorities around the world. The group hosts conferences, meetings, and webinars providing guidance on best practices. Since its founding, the IAMRA has strong ties to the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), an organization that has pressured medical professionals not to speak out against COVID vaccines or risk disciplinary actions.

History

In 1994, the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States, through a contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, held the first International Conference on Medical Regulation. 1 Seven nations participated in a discussion on medical regulation. A subsequent conference was held in 1996. 2 This led to the formation of a more formalized structure for conferences focusing on medical regulations, licensing, and discipline. 3

In 2000, medical regulatory authorities from the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden, South Africa, and the United Kingdom formed the International Association of Medical Licensing Authorities (IAMLA). 4 The IAMLA was incorporated in 2004 as a nonprofit in Texas as the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities. 5

Activities

International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities has more than 100 members from around the world that meet at biennial conferences. 6 In additional to conferences, IAMRA also hosts symposiums and webinars on various topics. 7 The International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities consists of five committees on management, programs, best practices, research, and information exchange. 8

IAMRA focuses on regulation, governance, and operations. 9 Although not mandates, guidance is provided to members on medical education, licensing, prescribing drugs, patient safety, information sharing, and regulations during a disaster, epidemic, or pandemic. 10 IAMRA also provides guidance on setting up and maintaining databases on doctor licensing, standing, and disciplinary actions. 11

Connections to FSMB

International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities has substantial connections to the Federation of State Medical Boards, which hosted the conference that led to IAMRA’s founding. 12 FSMB and IAMRA share the same address and telephone number. 13 The secretary of IAMRA is also the president and CEO of FSMB. 14

In July 2021, the Federation of State Medical Boards issued a statement that doctors who spread COVID-19 vaccine misinformation or disinformation may have their medical license suspended or revoked. 15 Since 2020, the IAMRA has held webinars on misinformation related to the COVID vaccine and on professional conduct and discipline in the era of COVID. 16

Finances

In 2019, International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities had net assets of $239,501. 17 According to the organization’s tax returns, in 2019 IAMRA recorded $173,826 in revenue and $161,965 in expenses. 18 In 2018, IAMRA had $189,031 in revenue and $163,329 in expenses. 19
