The Wright State University Foundation is a nonprofit that handles gifts for Wright State University. It is a separate charitable organization that is run by its own board of trustees. 1 The Wright State University audit for 2020 and 2021 states that contributions to the foundation are “primarily restricted to the activities of the University.” 2

The foundation conducted two major fundraising campaigns in the past 20 years. The “Tomorrow Takes Flight” campaign raised $123.1 million and concluded in 2006 and the “Rise. Shine. The Campaign for Wright State University” effort raised $167.7 million and ended in 2017. 3

The Wright State University Foundation was incorporated December 15, 1966. The Wright State University Foundation has given more than $51 million in scholarships in its history. 4

Finances

The foundation reported $15.97 million in total revenues in 2019. 5 The total revenues increased to $35.2 million in 2021. 6 As of 2021, the foundation had $166 million in total assets, of which $152 million was investment in securities. 7

The Wright State Foundation donated $3.2 million to various academic programs and distributed $2.9 million for student financial aid in 2019. 8

Leadership

Andrea Kunk was on the board of trustees from 2010 to 2021, serving as the chair for her last two years. 9 Kunk is president of Peerless Technologies, which is a company with 500 employees that focuses on military research. 10

David Deptula became the chair of the board in 2022. He is vice president of legal and special projects for Dayton Freight Lines, Inc. 11

Scott Rash has been president and CEO of the Wright State University Foundation since September 2019. 12 He spent the previous 12 years working at various colleges in fundraising positions. 13

Linda Black-Kurek is the vice chair of the board of trustees. She is president of Liberty Health Care Corporation. 14

Rebecca Cole served as vice president for advancement and president of the Wright State University Foundation for 13 years before retiring in July 2019. 15

Fundraising Campaigns

The “Tomorrow Takes Flight” campaign raised $123.1 million and ended in 2006. 16 It created 200 new scholarships and included five endowed chairs and professorships. 17

The “Rise. Shine. The Campaign for Wright State University” effort raised $167.7 million started in 2008 and ended in 2017. It created scholarships, was used to hire faculty and supported construction of facilities. 18
