Ted Trimpa is a Democratic Party-aligned attorney and political strategist. He is known particularly for his political work in Colorado and has been described as “Colorado’s answer to Karl Rove” by The Atlantic. 1
One of Trimpa’s more notable political victories occurred in 2008 when he negotiated a compromise between labor and business coalitions in which both sides agreed to withdraw proposed ballot initiatives. In 2010, Trimpa worked with environmental groups and natural gas companies to support legislation that established emissions regulations for power plants. 1
Trimpa is also a noted advocate for LGBT issues. He has also reportedly been a political advisor to Tim Gill, a software entrepreneur, Democratic activist, and the founder of the Gill Foundation, a left-of-center grantmaking institution focused primarily on supporting LGBT interests. The foundation has disbursed over $459 million since its inception; Gill is one of the largest funders of LGBT interests nationwide. The Trimpa Group states that its main policy focuses include LGBT issues, health care, drug policy, environmental issues, electoral reform, labor issues, gender issues, campaign finance reform, and gun-related issues. Ted Trimpa is the CEO of the Trimpa Group. As of January 2026, Trimpa has also been a member of the boards of the Democracy Alliance, ProgressNow, Third Way, and Voices for Progress. 1
Previously, Trimpa worked for former U.S. Senator Nancy Kassebaum (R-KS) and for the law firms Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck and Hogan Lovells. 1
Other than his early work for the centrist Republican Sen. Kassebaum, Trimpa is a career Democratic strategist and operative, with a particular focus on state policy. In part, he is credited with some of the Democratic Party’s electoral success in Colorado. He has also been named one of “the top five Democratic political players in the state” by Campaigns & Elections. 1
