Maribel Morey is a left-wing activist, author, and professor from Miami, Florida. 1 She is the founder and executive director of the Miami Institute for the Social Sciences, which works to eradicate racism against the “Global Majority” among social scientists in industrialized nations. 2

In 2021, Morey published White Philanthropy: Carnegie Corporation’s An American Dilemma and the Making of a White World Order. 3 The book is an analysis of funder-grantee relationships and race relations studies funded by philanthropic foundations. 4 Prior to writing her book, Morey received $200,000 from the Carnegie Corporation for her research. 5 6

Background

In 2016, Morey received $200,000 in grants from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. 7 As an Andrew Carnegie Fellow, she worked on a project titled “Big Philanthropy in The Lives of Black Americans: What Today’s Foundations Can Learn from This History.” 8 Morey claims that Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Corporation at the time, encouraged her to research and critique An American Dilemma, a 1944 study on racial policy funded by Carnegie. 9 Morey claims there was opposition from staff at Carnegie, as some supported the study’s conclusions. 10

Miami Institute for the Social Sciences

In 2020, Morey founded and became executive director of the Miami Institute of Social Sciences. 11 The institute claims that it works to eradicate racism against the “Global Majority” among social scientists in industrialized nations, including by working to “center[] the scientific output of Global Majority scholars in the social sciences.” 12 The institute hosts forums on topics such as economics, philosophy, and sociology. 13 Forums included addresses on discrimination and bias in economics, colonization in philosophy, and emancipation in sociology. 14 The Miami Institute states that its goal is to foster discussions on academia without “white Anglo-American domination.” 15

Morey stated in an interview that her institute would pursue “institutional and financial independence from elite white actors in the academe and philanthropy to disrupt their overwhelming power over the construction of authoritative knowledge in the social sciences.” 16 The group did not want to become beholden to the will of philanthropic institutions founded by white men. Morey believed that receiving funding from those groups created bias in favor of the philanthropies that the institute sought to challenge. However, maintaining “sufficient dialogue” with big philanthropy to “achieve the Institute’s disruptive goals” was necessary. 17

White Philanthropy

Morey has produced several publications, including one book, White Philanthropy: Carnegie Corporation’s An American Dilemma and the Making of a White World Order. 18

In White Philanthropy, Morey argued that the Carnegie Corporation’s funding of the 1944 report An American Dilemma: The Negro Problem and Modern Democracy , written by Swedish economist Gunnar Myrdal, reflected “white-Anglo American domination” 19 and was written “to help white policymakers” to “address perceived problems in their governance of Black people.” 20 The report, Morey argued, was intended to “mak[e] white Americans feel good about themselves” about racial inequity. 21

Morey claimed that the evidence showed philanthropic organizations aided white supremacy “through their grant-making practices.” 22 The book analyzed studies on white philanthropy directed to racial minorities. 23 Morey analyzed funder-grantee relationships through the lens of “white domination” 24 and “privileging the interests of white people.” 25

Moreover, Morey contended that white philanthropy sought the goal of “full eradication” of black people and blackness, 26 consistent with her belief that Americans held a “longstanding and continued commitment to white supremacy and Black subordination.” 27

Upon the book’s release, White Philanthropy was lauded by many figures in philanthropy and academia. Nathaniel Heller, a managing director at the philanthropic consulting firm Geneva Global, stated that White Philanthropy was “an essential read for philanthropy advisors.” 28 Juvaria Jafri of the University of London called Morey’s work a “vivid and thorough account” of the Carnegie Corporation’s intent. 29

As of 2022, Morey planned to produce another book that addresses the relationships between philanthropies and civil rights. 30

Political Activity

As a professor at Clemson University, Morey advised the Southern Poverty Law Center campus club. 31 She is also a contributor on academic panels concerning left-of-center social policy. 32

In 2020, Morey donated $110 to ActBlue, a left-leaning 527 political action committee. 33 She donated $100 to Warren for America, a political committee supporting the 2020 presidential campaign of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). 34
