Mabel van Oranje is the chair of the advisory council of Global Witness, 1 the co-founder and board chair of the New York-based VOW to End Child Marriage, 2 and the founder and board chair of Girls, Not Brides as of November 2021. 3 4

Previously she was a member of left-of-center billionaire George Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF) Global Board, 5 6 the director of OSF’s international advocacy from 2003 to 2008, and the director of OSF’s Brussels office from 1997 to 2003. 7

She is on the board of a number of left-of-center non-profits including Co-Impact’s Gender Fund, 8 the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, Crisis Action, and Global Witness, which has received donations from the Alexander Soros Foundation. 9 10

Van Oranje is a co-founder and chair emeritus of the left-of-center European Council on Foreign Relations 11 and was recognized as a member of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders in 2005. 12 She was married to Dutch Prince Friso of Orange-Nassau until his death in 2013. 13

Career

Mabel M. van Oranje is the chair of the advisory council of Global Witness as of November 2021. 14 Previously she was the director of international advocacy for liberal billionaire George Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF) from 2003 to 2008 and the director of OSF’s Brussels office from 1997 to 2003. 15 She has also been a member of the Open Society Foundations global board. 16 17

Van Oranje has said that “as long as there are people like George Soros out there who make it possible for people out there who have a vision of positive to try to create that positive change, we are headed in the right direction” 18 and shared links on social media which attempt to debunk “myths about George Soros.” 19

She is a co-founder and board chair of New York-based VOW to End Child Marriage 20 and the founder and board chair of Girls, Not Brides since June 2011. 21 22 Girls, Not Brides opposes child marriage and receives funding from the United Nations, the Dutch and Canadian governments, and left-of-center organizations including the Ford Foundation, NoVo Foundation, Open Society Foundations, and Skoll Foundation. 23

She is a board member of Foundation Chanel, Sigrid Rausing Trust, VOW for Girls, Apolitical Academy Global, left-of-center Co-Impact’s Gender Fund, 24 the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, Crisis Action, and Global Witness, which has received donations from the Alexander Soros Foundation. 25 26

Van Oranje was a board member of Malala Fund from January 2016 to January 2020 27 and was the CEO of the Elders Foundation until 2012, when she resigned following the hospitalization of her husband, Prince Friso of the Netherlands. 28

She is a co-founder and chair emeritus of the European Council on Foreign Relations 29 and a co-founder of War Child Holland and the European Action Council for Peace in the Balkans. 30 In 2005, van Oranje was recognized as one of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders. 31

Van Oranje has claimed that “you don’t have to be a racist to be racist” 32 and said that society values “men more than women, straight love more than gay love, white skin more than black skin, and the rich more than the poor.” 33 She also attacked the Trump administration’s immigration policy and construction of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, saying the funds used on this project would have been better spent “against hurricanes and flooding.” 34

Personal Information

Mabel M. van Oranje was married to Dutch Prince Friso of Orange-Nassau until his death after 18 months of unconsciousness following a 2012 ski accident. 35 She resides in London, England, 36 and holds master’s degrees of political science and government and economics from the University of Amsterdam. 37
