Gwendolyn Sontheim Meyer is a billionaire philanthropist and the great granddaughter of W.W. Cargill, who in 1865 founded the food-production conglomerate Cargill Corporation. As of October 2024, Cargill is estimated to be the largest private company in the United States with an estimated revenue of $114 to $160 billion. The Cargill family retains 80 percent of the company’s ownership; Sontheim Meyer controls 8 percent of Cargill through her inheritance. During the 2024 election cycle, Sontheim Meyer donated over $2.5 million, making her the 13th largest donor of the cycle as of October 2024. 4 She donated $1.8 million to a Super PAC supporting the presidential campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris for president. She also contributed almost $600,000 to a Super PAC supporting the reelection campaign of U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and another $250,000 to the Fight Like Hell National Super PAC run by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D). 1 5

Environmental Activism

In February 2022, E&E News obtained public records through the Freedom of Information Act showing that Gwendolyn Sontheim Meyer met with Biden administration Environmental Protection Agency administrator Michael Regan to oppose Pebble Mine, a proposed copper and gold project in Alaska’s Bristol Bay region. In a public statement, Sontheim Meyer claimed she was opposed to the Pebble Mine and advocated support for local Native tribes within the region. 11

Other Philanthropy

As of 2024, Gwendolyn Sontheim Meyer is the director of food-bank administration group Aqualia International Foundation. 11 She also founded community group Feeding San Diego in 2007, holding the position of board chair as of 2024. 11 12 She has previously donated grants to advocacy group Lucky Duck Foundation. 13
