Career
Anita Jain was born in New Delhi and immigrated to the United States at six months old. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University in 1994. 1 She has been working as a journalist and nonprofit staffer for over 20 years. Her writings have appeared in the Washington Post, the Guardian, Wall Street Journal, and New York. 2
Jain was a foreign correspondent for the Financial Times in New Delhi, as well as Dow Jones Newswires in London and Singapore. She went on to work as communications director at Center for Popular Democracy and an editor at Carnegie Corporation of New York. 2
As editorial director of the Open Markets Institute, Jain assigns and edits texts written by the think tank’s staff. These include the Corner newsletter, which claims to be the United States’ leading newsletter on monopolies, as well as policy papers and op-eds. 2
Political Views
In July 2023, Jain authored a newsletter for Open Markets Institute commending President Joe Biden for his Bidenomics policies, particularly a crack down on non-compete agreements as part of its wider anti-monopoly push. “The pivotal role competition policy currently plays within Bidenomics — the name given to the administration’s worker-centered policies — is the fruition of yearslong advocacy by Open Markets Institute,” Jain wrote. 3
In September 2023, Jain published a review of Compact founder Sohrab Ahmari’s book Tyranny, Inc: How Private Power Crushed American Liberty through the center-left outlet Washington Monthly. 4 In the piece, she finds herself agreeing with much of what Ahmari has to say about economics, from his endorsement of the New Deal and labor unions to his condemnation of fiscal conservativism and cuts to welfare spending. However, she reminds her progressive audience that Ahmari is also a traditionalist Catholic who wants to implement right-of-center social policies. 5
