Students Learn Students Vote (SLSV) is a nationwide voter education and activation network focused on college student voter participation. 1

Though SLSV describes itself as nonpartisan, its leadership is aligned with the Democratic Party, it is fiscally sponsored by left-of-center clearinghouse NEO Philanthropy, and it promotes left-of-center principles such as the assertion that “white supremacy, anti-blackness, and xenophobia is woven into the very fabric of our nation.” 2 3 4

History, Leadership and Partisanship

Students Learn Students Vote works through chapters at colleges and universities across the country to educate student voters and increase student voter turnout. It is active on more than 800 campuses nationwide. 5

SLSV claims to be nonpartisan, but its leadership is largely made up of left-of-center activists and Democratic Party operatives and its stated organizational principles reflect left-wing positions on issues such as race, gender, and sexuality. 6

It was launched in 2016 by members of Young Invincibles, a left-of-center youth advocacy group founded by Ari Matsuiak, a former special assistant to the President during the Obama administration. 7 Its co-founder and current executive director is Clarissa Unger, a Democratic operative who worked for the 2008 Obama presidential campaign. 8

The organization’s executive board includes Mike Burns of the campus left-of-center litigation and election policy advocacy group Fair Elections Center, Tamer Mokhtar of the Democratic-leaning voter engagement group All Americans Vote, left-of-center Minnesota activist Mike Dean, and former Office of Management and Budget associate director Pam Coleman, who had led the Biden administration’s efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles in the federal workforce. 9 10 11 12 Its advisory board includes representatives of left-of-center and left-leaning groups such as ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, Rise, Southern Poverty Law Center, and Voto Latino. 13

SLSV’s directory of partner organizations includes numerous national left-of-center and Democratic Party-aligned organizations such as Alliance for Youth Organizing, Civic Nation, Common Cause, Democracy Works, Fair Elections Center, Generation Progress, Healthy Democracy Healthy People, I am a Voter, ideas42, IssueVoter, Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, League of Women Voters, Mi Familia Vota, Motivote, NAACP Youth & College, National Disability Rights Network, National Urban League, National Voter Corps, NCAI Native Vote, New Voters, Nonprofit VOTE, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Public Citizen, Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, Rise, Rock the Vote, Scholars Strategy Network, Students for JusticeThe Civics Center, The National Vote at Home Institute, TurnUp Activism, Union of Concerned Scientists, United States Student Association, U.S. Public Interest Resource GroupVote Early Day, Vote16USA, VoteRiders, Voto Latino, When We All Vote, and Young Invincibles. 14

Programs and Projects

Students Learn Students Vote works largely through student-run chapters at college and university campuses. 15 It provides student leaders with action plans, tools, data, and funding to implement voter education and turnout plans at their campuses. 16

In 2024, SLSV co-launched a project with Levi Strauss & Co, Lyft, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, Paramount Global, and the American Association of Community Colleges to increase voter participation among community college students, with a goal of 500,000 new student voters by the 2028 election. 17
