Planet Over Profit (POP) is a left-of-center environmental advocacy group that claims climate change is caused by “white supremacist colonizers.” 1 The group has advocated divestment from traditional sources of energy including oil and gas while supporting the use of weather-dependent energy. The group’s website has also claimed that environmental advocacy is linked to advocacy regarding LGBT activism and abortion access. 2 1
In 2025, members of POP promoted and participated in #TeslaTakedown, a series of protests and activist movements against electric-car company Tesla in response to Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s participation in the second Trump administration. 3
Advocacy
Planet Over Profit (POP) claims to be a youth-led activist movement founded to combat climate change. The group has previously claimed that the planet is being negatively affected by an “existential climate crisis” as well as a “lethal inequality crisis” promoted by wealth hoarding in a “racial capitalist system.” 2
The organization has previously advocated against oil and gas corporations while further claiming that billionaires, specifically those in the tech industry, are “flooding fossil-fueling fascists with ill-gotten cash.” 1 The group has also claimed that climate change is caused by “greedy, white supremacist colonizers.” 2 1
The POP has also advocated for left-of-center policy towards other issues such as abortion access and LGBT activism. 1
Activities
According to its website, Planet Over Profit (POP) has three primary campaigns. The first campaign seeks to end oil and gas infrastructure construction and to decommission oil and gas infrastructure to transition towards a weather-dependent energy model, while claiming any new conventional fuel-related projects are “a death sentence to all current and future generations.” 2
POP’s second campaign is to advocate for ending all financing of oil and gas industries. Several groups that POP claims are contributing to climate change through financing pipelines and fracking include Citibank, BlackRock, and KKR. POP advocates that banks, investment firms, and other financial organizations divest from the oil and gas industry. 2
POP’s third campaign is to advocate redistributing wealth through increased taxes on billionaires and private companies and spending the revenues on race-based reparations and “Green social housing” to combat what it calls the “wealthy, virtually all-white elite.” 2 1
Controversy
In 2025, activists with Planet over Profit (POP) participated in and promoted #TeslaTakedown, an activist movement that organized several protests against dealerships for the electric-car company Tesla over its CEO Elon Musk’s participation in the second Trump administration. 3
On March 29, 2025, Planet Over Profit participated in a rally shutting down a Tesla showroom in New York featuring signs that read “You would’ve fought the Nazis? Now’s Your Chance” and condemning President Donald Trump for his immigration enforcement policies. One speaker at the event claimed “the struggle for Palestine is the struggle for the Earth. The struggle for the Earth is the struggle for just health care, is the struggle for trans rights.” 4
