The National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership (NNIP) is a left-of-center project that supports communities by providing data and financial aid to help identify and address issues. According to its website, the NNIP focuses on advancing, “racial and economic equity in policy and practice around the country.” 1

NNIP is a project of the Urban Institute, a left-of-center nonprofit founded by President Lyndon Johnson to research social and economic issues. The Urban Institute coordinates NNIP’s efforts, managing partnerships in over 30 U.S. cities and identifying potential collaborators. 2

History

National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership (NNIP) was founded in 1996 as a national community network aimed at improving local neighborhoods. Its founder, G. Thomas Kingsley, led the organization from its establishment until 2012. 1

Background

National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership (NNIP) is a project of the Urban Institute, a left-of-center nonprofit founded by President Lyndon Johnson to research social and economic issues. The Urban Institute coordinates NNIP’s efforts, managing partnerships in over 30 U.S. cities and identifying potential collaborators. 2

One member of the network as of 2024 is the Kinder Institute for Urban Research, which joined in 2016, that is a left-of-center think-tank run by Rice University in Houston, Texas that leverages data for direct political action. 3 4

Funding

The National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership (NNIP) is funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, which has supported the group since 1996 through financial and non-financial assistance. 5 According to its website, the group previously received support from the Rockefeller Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. 5

According to tax returns, the NNIP has received financial support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation since 2019, with grants ranging from $265,000 to $335,000, which were directed at the Urban Institute to support NNIP. 6 7 8 9 10

Another supporter is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, an advocacy foundation supporting health care policy. 5 In the tax returns of 2023, NNIP received financial support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, with a grant worth $1,000,000, directed to the Urban Institute for NNIP. 11
