Bought by Zionism is a left-of-center, anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian activist group that tracks financial investments by pro-Israel groups in American politics and business. 1 It is a fiscally sponsored project of CODEPINK, a left-wing advocacy group of feminists that opposes the state of Israel and has been accused of aligning with the Chinese Communist Party. 2

Although Bought by Zionism is left-of-center, it criticizes both Republican and Democratic Members of U.S. Congress for their support of Israel. 3

Initiatives

Bought by Zionism has several campaigns aimed at exposing the influence of pro-Israel entities in American politics and business. Its Politicians project tracks the money that American members of U.S. Congress receive from pro-Israel groups. 4

Listed among the politicians it says are “bought” by pro-Israel interests is President Joe Biden, whom Bought by Zionism claims has received over $5 million from pro-Israel lobbies. Bought by Zionism refers to President Biden as “Genocide Joe” and “Genocide Architect in Chief.” 5 Bought by Zionism also criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, whom it refers to as “Killer Kamala.” The group claims Vice President Harris has also received over $5 million from pro-Israel groups. 6 7

Other prominent American officials that Bought by Zionism lists include U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL). 8 In total, Bought by Zionism claims that pro-Israel lobbies have spent $264,952,881 to control American politicians. 9

Bought by Zionism also follows the money spent by weapons manufacturers and weapons lobbies to maintain American involvement in foreign wars. It claims that weapons providers have spent tens of millions lobbying for American support for continued warfare and military support of foreign states, including Israel. 10

Bought by Zionism maintains a separate campaign to track the influence of pro-Israel advocacy groups, most prominently the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Bought by Zionism says that AIPAC and other Zionist lobbies have spent $39,449,387 in American politics. CODEPINK, Bought by Zionism’s parent group, published an article with a quote from United States Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) stating, “Every Republican has an AIPAC babysitter representing Israel.” CODEPINK celebrated what it saw as validation of its claim against AIPAC. 11 Bought by Zionism also encourages people to “Disrupt AIPAC,” offering a link on its website to upload videos of people harassing and ambushing AIPAC employees during meetings and conferences. 12

Bought by Zionism also follows the money that think tanks spend and receive in their efforts to shape pro-Israel public policy in the United States. It claims that think tanks have spent and received a total of $472,425,000 advocating for Israeli interests over those of Palestinians. 13 14 The group also cites that Jewish charities and Christian Zionist charities have received $3,545,293,000 in support since what it calls “the occupation” of Palestinian land began. 15 16

Bought by Zionism also organizes protests at the offices of United States Representatives and Senators that it claims are “bought” by pro-Israel interest groups. 17

Parent Organization

CODEPINK is the parent organization of Bought by Zionism. It is a left-wing, feminist group with alleged Communist sympathies. 18 It is also a supporter of the “Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions” (BDS) campaign which seeks to ostracize Israel from the international community. Israeli officials have barred CODEPINK employees from entering the country under a law that prohibits foreign BDS activists from the country. 19

CODEPINK has been accused of aligning with the Chinese Communist Party. 20 Neville Roy Singham, a leftist U.S. citizen who lives in Shanghai and has ties to the Chinese Communist Party, has donated more than $1.4 million to CODEPINK through his affiliated companies. 21 CODEPINK has also received criticism for its alleged denial of the Chinese Communist Party’s human rights violations, including the Uyghur genocide. 22

Finances

CODEPINK is the fiscal sponsor of Bought by Zionism. In 2023, CODEPINK reported $1,230,357 in revenue, $1,178,588 in expenses, and $1,863,632 in net assets. 23
