    Background

Block and Build Funder Coalition reportedly began organizing in the summer of 2024. The Wall Street Journal reported that it consisted of “roughly 250 decision makers at foundations and some nonprofits” who were devising alternative structures for philanthropic efforts if a second Trump administration revoked tax-exempt statuses or otherwise restructured the nonprofit laws. 1

    Women Donors Network

As of May 2025, the Women Donors Network is the only publicly identified member of the Block and Build Funder Coalition. 1

Leena Barakat, the executive director of the Women Donors Network, said of the movement that “[t]he biggest message has been, all of this is in some ways pointless if we don’t keep funding boldly,” according to the Wall Street Journal.  1

The Women Donors Network signed onto a pledge from the Council on Foundations aimed at protecting nonprofit status and claiming that the “health and safety of the American people, our nation’s economic stability, and the vibrancy of our democracy depend on it.” As of June 2025, the pledge had over 700 signers. 2
