U.S. Public Interest Research Group (US-PIRG) Education Fund

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund is the research and educational arm of the left-of-center advocacy organization U.S. Public Interest Research Group (US-PIRG). US-PIRG Education Fund conducts research and public education campaigns to support its counterpart’s advocacy and lobbying efforts. Both are members of the Public Interest Network. ¹

Founding and History

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (US-PIRG) Education Fund was created in 1984 as the educational and research affiliate of the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (US-PIRG). ²

Ralph Nader and Donald Ross had proposed the model for the PIRGs in their 1971 book “Action for a Change,” arguing that students on college campuses could pool small fees to hire professional researchers and lobbyists to promote consumer and environmental legislation. ³ Led by Ross, the model was replicated by state chapters across the country. ⁴

By the early 1980s, state PIRGs had established lobbying offices in most states, and in 1983 they formed US-PIRG to coordinate their federal advocacy in Washington, D.C, with the Education Fund established the following year. ^{5 6}

Activities

The US. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund conducts research and public education on issues related to consumer’s interests based on the group’s research and studies. Their website hosts articles analyzing policy related to content on topics such as consumer products, AI data privacy, and the environment. ⁷

It also hosts a variety of petitions purportedly directed at companies and legislators. ⁷

U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S PIRG)

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S PIRG), the advocacy and lobbying organization that the U.S PIRG Education Fund provides research to support, has faced criticism for its financial practices. In particular, the PIRG model of automatic, or previously mandatory, student fees in some universities have been the subject of several federal and Supreme Court cases. ^{8 9}

Its two canvassing and fundraising arms, The Fund for the Public Interest and Grassroots Campaigns, Inc., have both faced allegations of and court action over labor law violations. ^{10 11}

Financials and Funding

In 2023, the US. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund reported a revenue of $2.17 million, its highest since 2010. ¹²

In 2023, total assets were $6.44 million, a high since 2017. However, total assets between 2017-2023 are lower than those reported 2007-2016. ¹³

The Education Fund received a $479K donor-advised contribution in 2023 from the Tides Foundation. In addition, the Fund received grants from left-of-center organizations including $298,000 between 2023 and 2024 from the Rocky Mountain Institute, roughly $456,000 between 2021 and 2022 from the Climate Imperative Foundation, and roughly $200,000 between 2022 and 2023 from the Chicago Community Trust. ¹⁴
