TINC operates an office space in San Francisco, Tides Converge (formerly the Thoreau Center for Sustainability), which rents office space to the other Tides organizations as well as a number of center-left nonprofits. TINC and Tides Converge are based in San Francisco’s historic Presidio grounds. 1
Relationship to the Tides Nexus
TINC is one of a number of nonprofits created to support the primary groups in the Tides Nexus: the Tides Foundation, which provides grantmaking services; the Tides Center, which incubates new left-wing nonprofits; and the Tides Network, the controlling entity for the various Tides organizations. Specifically, TINC operates a San Francisco, California-based office space, which it rents to other nonprofits, including those in the Tides Nexus. TINC was formed in 2002. 2
TINC describes its mission and primary program purpose as the following: 3
Tides, Inc. operates Tides Converge in San Francisco (previously the Thoreau Center for Sustainability) (the “Facility”), which provides office space for the internal operations of [the] Tides Foundation and the Tides Center, and many other charitable and/or mission-aligned organizations, and provides opportunities for community-based meet-ups and connections.
It further describes its role in the Tides Nexus in relationship to an $8,500 grant it paid to the Presidio Trust in 2018, a government-controlled entity responsible for maintaining the historic Presidio grounds in San Francisco: 4
Tides, Inc.’s primary activity is providing workspace, and [it] only makes a limited number of grants. . . . On certain occasions, it makes a few grants to pre-selected charitable organizations. The grant to the Presidio Trust was monitored via first hand observation as the organization [TINC] is domiciled in the Presidio where the shuttle operations (which was the purpose of the grant) takes place.
