Stainman Family Foundation

The Stainman Family Foundation is a left-of-center grantmaking organization that supports taxpayer-funded abortion, left-leaning social activism, left-leaning election law organizations, and environmentalist organizations. 1 It was established in by Arthur Stainman and his wife Lois in 1998 and makes contributions to left of-center organizations. 2

    Grantmaking

    The Stainman Family Foundation contributes to organizations that support taxpayer-funded abortions, left-leaning social activism and election law focused organizations, and environmentalist organizations. 1

    Abortion

    Organizations supported by the foundation have advocated for political candidates that seek to expand access to abortion through taxpayer funding, organizations that seek to increase abortion clinics in minority communities,8  and legislation that would outlaw state laws that place guard rails on when a medical professional can perform abortions. 9

    In 2018, the foundation made contributions to NARAL Pro-Choice America (NARAL) ($100,0000), Trust Women Foundation ($25,000), Center for Reproductive Rights ($6,000) Planned Parenthood ($40,000),  Abortion Care Network ($5,000), and Women Have Options ($1,000). 1

    Social Activism and Election Law

    Organizations supported by the foundation advocate for limiting free speech activity,10 advocacy for gay, lesbian, and transgender issues,11 and organizations that provide legal and healthcare services to illegal immigrants. 12

    In 2018, the foundation made contributions to the ACLU ($30,000), People for the American Way ($25,000), and Third Wave Fund ($1,500). 1

    Environmentalist Organizations

    Organizations supported by the foundation have prevented the development and natural resource extraction of land by directly purchasing land for conservation13 and organizations that oppose the development of public lands populated by wildlife through litigation and advocacy. 14

    In 2018, the foundation made contributions to Wilderness Society ($30,000), Open Space Institute ($25,000), GrowNYC ($5,000), and  Kew Foundation America ($250). 1

    Other Contributions

    Lois Stainman is listed as the fifth largest donor to People for the American Way (PFAW), a social-liberal organization that  seeks to limit the spread of right-of-center principles and ideas. PFAW reports that she has made $566,717 in contributions to PFAW15 but does not specify whether Stainman contributed directly or whether the contributions were made through the Stainman Family Foundation.

    Leadership

    The Stainman Family Foundation president is Arthur Stainman, a managing director at the asset management firm First Manhattan Company. Stainman’s wife, Lois Stainman, is the vice president of the foundation. 16
