The Rosenthal Family Foundation is the private foundation of “Everybody Loves Raymond” creator Philip Rosenthal and his wife, actress Monica Horan Rosenthal. The Foundation supports left-of-center advocacy groups, arts and culture institutions, and food insecurity relief groups in the greater Los Angeles area and around the world.

Both Rosenthal and Horan are large donors to the Democratic Party. 1 Their foundation has given to liberal advocacy groups including Alliance for Justice, Demos, Feminist Majority Foundation, Obama Foundation, and Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. 2

Advocacy Activities

Somebody Feed the People

In October 2020, the Rosenthal Family Foundation created the Somebody Feed the People (SFTP) initiative, a national campaign that provided meals to people while they stood in line at polling places. 3 The Foundation partnered with food organizations and matched contributions up to $250,000. 4

The initiative continued after the election to work with organizations that address food access and insecurity, support restaurant workers, generate employment, and strengthen the food system, especially surrounding major political events. 5 Partners include World Central Kitchen, Homeboy Industries, Food Forward, Vote.Org, Georgia Rising, and The Good Deed Corps. 6

Political Action

Both Phil and Monica Horan Rosenthal signed an open letter supporting a nuclear agreement between Iran and six other world powers that was led by the United States. The group of 98 Jewish community members ran a full-page ad in the Jewish Journal to urge Congress to approve the agreement. 7

Phil Rosenthal directed former President Bill Clinton’s video, “The Final Days,” as well as wrote material for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner that President Clinton attended. 8

Individual Political Donations

The Rosenthal Family Foundation contributed more than $1 million to the Obama Foundation for the Obama Presidential Center in the Chicago area. 9 Along with the Rosenthal Family Foundation, other contributors include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and Marilyn and Jim Simons. 10

While the Foundation is prohibited from intervening in elections by federal tax law, in their individual capacities the Rosenthals were guests at the Obama White House for a state dinner with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore. 11 According to filings with the Federal Election Commission, Phil Rosenthal has contributed to hundreds of left-leaning Democratic groups and individuals, including Biden for President, Planned Parenthood Votes, Forward Majority Action, Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA), ActBlue, Swing Left, and Blue Momentum PAC. 1
