Open Society Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit grantmaking organization based in New York and founded by left-of-center megadonor George Soros. 1 Formed in 1979, George Soros serves as its president and director, while his children Jonathan Soros and Andrea Soros Colombel serve as directors for the group as well. 2 During the 1980’s, the group expanded to other countries within Africa and Europe to “[open] up closed societies, making open societies more viable, and promoting a critical mode of thinking.” 3
