    Founding and History

In April 2016, a meeting of 25 Alaska Native groups was held at Kotzebue in northwest Alaska, also known as Kikiktagruk. This meeting was comprised of various native community leaders as well as interested community members. The main object of the gathering was to organize the native community for political mobilization regarding political interests, including regulations regarding environmentalism and the preservation of the native way of life. This led to the creation of Native Vision, which was later renamed Native Peoples Action Community Fund as a charitable group and Native Peoples Action as a lobbying and electoral advocacy group. 6

    Financials

For 2023, Native Peoples Action reported $468,840 in revenue, of which $454,943 stemmed from contributions and grants, $12,333 from program service revenue, and $515 from investment income. It reported $312,516 in expenses, of which $204,276 was spent on salaries and compensation, $4,200 for conferences and meetings, and $7,799 in program and event expenses. It ended the year with a surplus of $156,324 and $1,154,510 in net assets. It did not report any government funding. 7

    Partner Organization

Native Peoples Action is the lobbying and electoral advocacy partner of the Native Peoples Action Community Fund, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. NPACF is more explicit on its website that it holds a left-of-center view on climate change and the need for dramatic changes to the world economy and the way humans live, and also uses the word “womxn” instead of “women.” 8 9

    Views

Native Peoples Action along with its partner 501(c)(3), Native Peoples Action Community Fund, holds left-of-center views on climate and sexuality issues. It claims that climate change is a major issue facing Alaska that requires a movement of climate justice and asserts that native people can help the world move from an extractive economy to one that emphasizes harmony with nature. In its website copy, the NPACF also uses the term “womxn” rather than “women.” 8  9

    Projects and Initiatives

Native Peoples Action works to lobby state and federal bureaucracies and regulatory bodies that affect Alaskan native communities. It deals with state advisory committees and various wild game, fishing, and subsistence regulatory bodies. Additionally, it is concerned with voting rights. NAP also administers leadership and activist training programs. 2  3  4  5  1
